The scoop

Marriage Allowance lets the lower earner transfer £1,260 of their Personal Allowance to their husband, wife or civil partner. That cuts the partner's tax by up to £252 a tax year.

It's free to apply online, and you can backdate a claim to 6 April 2022 for any years you were eligible.

How to claim it

  1. 1

Check that you're eligible on GOV.UK.

  2. 2

The lower earner applies online for Marriage Allowance.

  3. 3

Ask to backdate the claim if you were eligible in earlier years.

Who qualifies

  • Married or in a civil partnership
  • Lower earner earns below their Personal Allowance (usually £12,570)
  • Higher earner pays basic rate tax (starter, basic or intermediate in Scotland)
