Canadian Passport Name Change After Marriage

by Government of Canada

How to get a Canadian passport in your married name, and why your travel bookings must match the name on your passport.

We're not affiliated with Government of Canada. Offers change, so confirm the details on the official site.

The scoop

If you're changing your last name because of marriage, you need to apply for a new passport, the same way as a new adult passport. Include your marriage certificate (original or copy), and your supporting ID must show your new last name.

Book your travel in the name on your passport. The Government of Canada warns that a mismatch can mean delays at the border or not being allowed to board.

How to claim it

  1. 1

Update your ID first so it shows your new last name.

  2. 2

Apply for a new passport and include your marriage certificate.

  3. 3

Keep honeymoon bookings in your current passport name until the new one arrives.

Who qualifies

  • Canadian citizens
  • Regular passport fees apply
